HOW DO YOU SPELL FILLO OR FILO PASTRY?

The word ‘Fillo’ is derived from the Greek word φύλλο which is spelt with two L’s meaning “leaf”, as compared to spelling it φίλο with one L which means “friend”.

When pronounced with one L, “Filo” is pronounced FI-LO, like SI-LO or MI-LO. With double L, Fillo is pronounced as FEE-LO, WILLOW, PILLOW.

For these reasons, we spell the word Fillo Pastry with two L’s.

Regardless of whether you spell it as Filo Pastry or Fillo Pastry, we can all agree that it’s one of the most wonderful pastries in the world to cook with!
